Sidekick is Useful—But It Has Real Limits
If you're running a Shopify store, you've probably heard about Shopify Sidekick, the AI assistant built right into your admin. It's tempting: free, no app install, sits in your admin dashboard. So naturally, you want it to do everything.
Problem is, it can't. Understanding what Sidekick can't do will save you hours of frustration and help you find the right tool for the work you actually need to do.
Sidekick is good at basic tasks—writing product descriptions, answering simple admin questions, generating email drafts. But the moment you need it to connect to your other tools, analyze customer data at scale, or handle anything customer-facing, you'll hit a wall.
Here's where those walls are.
The Three Big Limitations
1. Can't Connect to Your Other Apps
Sidekick only talks to Shopify. It can't access Klaviyo, Gorgias, Zendesk, Recharge, Yotpo, Oxygen, or any of the other apps running your business.
This is a massive limitation because your business isn't just Shopify—it's Shopify plus your email platform, your support desk, your subscription manager, and whatever else you've bolted on.
Let's say you want to:
- Pull a report of your top customers from Shopify and add them to a segment in Klaviyo
- Answer a customer support question from Gorgias by pulling order data from Shopify
- Audit your subscription customers in Recharge against your Shopify store
Sidekick can't do any of that. It can't read from Gorgias. It can't write to Klaviyo. It can't cross-reference data between systems.
If your business relies on integrations (and what business doesn't?), Sidekick can only see your Shopify side of the picture.
2. Can't Answer Customer Questions or Handle Support
Sidekick is admin-only. Your customers can't ask it questions, and it can't answer "Where is my order?" or "Can I change my shipping address?" or "How do I use this discount code?"
This sounds obvious, but it's worth naming: if you've been hoping Sidekick could power customer support or handle customer-facing AI, it won't.
For that, you need a separate tool entirely—whether that's a chatbot, a help desk integration, or a custom agent that can process customer data securely.
3. The Analytics Are Weak—And Hallucinate
Sidekick can pull basic store stats. But it doesn't do cohort analysis, customer lifetime value (LTV) calculations, churn analysis, or cross-platform analytics.
More importantly: Sidekick hallucinates on technical data. Users in the Shopify Community forums have documented cases where Sidekick generates convincing-looking SEO recommendations that are factually wrong. It confidently tells you things about your store's technical SEO, page speed, or indexation that don't match reality.
This isn't Sidekick being incompetent—it's how LLMs work. They're pattern-matching machines, not data systems. When they don't have real data, they fill in gaps with plausible-sounding nonsense.
Don't rely on Sidekick for any analytics claim you need to be certain about.
Three More Constraints Worth Knowing
Limited conversation history: Sidekick keeps only 10 conversations in your history. After that, older conversations disappear. If you need to reference something you asked a week ago, it's gone.
Can't process returns: Sidekick can't handle return workflows. If you need to process a return, approve a refund, or manage a return request, you have to do it yourself.
Can't execute complex, multi-step operations: Sidekick is designed for single tasks—"Write a product description" or "Summarize my sales." But if you need something like "Pull all customers who bought in the last 30 days, check which ones have opened my Klaviyo emails, create a segment for re-engagement, then run an analysis," that's beyond its scope.
What You Actually Need for These Jobs
The good news: there are tools designed for the work Sidekick can't do. The trick is knowing which tool for which job.
For Cross-App Workflows
If you need to pull data from one tool and push it to another, you have two broad options:
Zapier/Make integrations: Good for repeating, simple workflows. Limited logic, charges per task or per month depending on your plan.
AI employees: Better for complex, variable workflows that need decision-making. These connect directly to your app APIs and can execute multi-step operations. With AI employees, you don't pay a monthly fee for the connection—you pay per run. A Zapier automation might cost $50-200/month whether you use it twice or 200 times. An AI employee charges 2-15 cents per execution.
This model works especially well for Shopify stores because your analysis and automation needs aren't always predictable. Order Analytics ($0.08/run) helps you spot sales patterns without a monthly subscription. Customer LTV ($0.12/run) calculates lifetime value per customer without buying an analytics platform. Customer Segmenter ($0.10/run) creates audience segments automatically, Win-Back campaigns ($0.11/run) target inactive customers, and Cross-Sell ($0.09/run) recommends products to increase order value.
For inventory work, Low Stock ($0.06/run) alerts you to what needs replenishment. For content, Product Description Writer ($0.06-$0.20/run) generates SKU descriptions at scale, while Discount Creator ($0.07/run) designs promotions based on your store's data. Data tasks like Email List Export ($0.05/run) and Customer Data Export ($0.04/run) pull the reports you need without a monthly tool tax.
For Customer-Facing Support
You need a chatbot or conversational AI that can:
- Read customer data securely
- Answer order status questions
- Handle account-related requests
- Route complex issues to your team
Shopify Magic can't do this. Neither can Sidekick. You'll need a dedicated customer service tool, a help desk integration, or a custom chatbot built on top of a foundation model.
For Real Analytics
Don't trust Sidekick for numbers that matter. Instead:
For cohort analysis and LTV: Use a dedicated analytics tool like Customer LTV or connect your data to Tableau, Looker, or your own BI tool.
For SEO audits: Use SEO-specific tools (Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking) that actually crawl your site. Never ask an LLM for technical SEO truth.
For general reporting: Use your platform's native analytics, or connect to a BI tool that reads directly from your data sources.
When Sidekick Actually Works Well
Let's be fair: Sidekick has real uses.
It's great for:
- Writing initial drafts of product descriptions, emails, and social posts (you still need to edit them)
- Quick admin questions like "What's the current exchange rate?" or "How do I set up a gift card?"
- Brainstorming product angles, marketing ideas, or email subject lines
- Documentation help if you're stuck in a Shopify Help article
Think of Sidekick as a smart intern who's good at writing and brainstorming, but doesn't have access to your business systems and can hallucinate on technical facts. Useful, but not trusted with critical operations.
The Real Solution: Layers of Tools
Most successful merchants use Sidekick plus other tools, each filling a specific gap:
- Sidekick for content generation and quick admin answers
- Integration platform (Zapier, Make, or AI employees) for cross-app workflows
- Dedicated tools for analytics, customer support, and compliance
- Occasional AI employees for one-off work that doesn't justify a monthly app subscription
This layered approach keeps costs down and prevents you from force-fitting Sidekick into jobs it can't handle.
Juvant AI builds purpose-built AI employees for exactly these gaps. The Order Analytics skill ($0.08 per run) spots your top-performing products and customer behaviors without connecting to an analytics platform. Customer Segmenter ($0.10 per run) creates buyer cohorts automatically. Product Description Writer ($0.06-$0.20 per run) generates SKU descriptions at scale when writing them yourself isn't realistic. These AI employees handle the multi-step work Sidekick can't do, and you pay only for what you run—no monthly fees hiding unused features.
The Takeaway
Sidekick is a useful tool, but it's not a complete AI solution for your store. It's strongest in content generation and weakest in data operations, integrations, and customer-facing work.
Know its limits. Use it for what it's built for. And when you need something more complex—analytics, cross-app workflows, customer support—reach for a tool designed for that specific job.
The goal isn't to replace Sidekick. It's to build a smart stack of tools that each do one thing well.
